“Every One’s a Winner” – July 8, 2012

As a kid, I remember looking forward to my parent’s annual company outing held at a nearby amusement park every summer.  The level of excitement can only be described as Christmas in the summer.  I would always wake up early to be the first through the gates, and was never ready to leave until the rides were being shut down.   Though the outing always had a roped off company picnic area which included pulled pork sandwiches and other picnic food, I hated taking a break from all the roller coasters & rides - which is the real reason I was there.  There was usually a game plan on the best order for the rides, which consisted of getting to the newest or...

Independence Day – July 4, 2012

Falling on a Wednesday, the 4th of July occurs at a unique time this year.  The time of year, when many local festivals are scheduled, happens midway between two weekends.  This year, while some of the festivals have been planned to occur the weekend after the actual holiday (July 7-8), it seems that an equal number have been scheduled to take place the weekend before (June 30-July 1).  The split in the schedule, along with the great (for anyone who can handle the record heat) local weather, is creating a week long celebration instead of the typical weekend festivities.    My celebration started this weekend at a city festival, complete with carnival rides, fried...
